This is Franklin Hills East-Lyric Loop, stairwalk #30, from the book, “Secret Stairs,” by Charles Fleming. As I was driving to Franklin Hills to do this stairwalk, the song “Beautiful Day” by U2 was playing on the radio. It was a beautiful day and the song definitely set the tone for the stairwalk. The first stair walk I did was this walk combined with Franklin Hills West, stairwalk #31. It was a walk led by Grace Vergara and the stairwalk meetup group. It was difficult the first time because I wasn’t in shape for the stairs. The second time I did this walk, it was led by author Charles Fleming and it was a combination walk of stairwalks #30 and #31. Charles leads a monthly walk, the first Sunday of every month. I have never done stair walks #30 and #31 separately and decided to do so.
One street I really enjoyed was Udell Court. The houses on this street are very charming and unique in design. No cookie cutter houses here. The street is very narrow, so narrow that I had to get off the street and onto the stairs as a car was coming. There is barely enough room for a car to pass with cars parked along one side the street, let alone a pedestrian. There also are no sidewalks. If two cars were coming towards each other in opposite directions, it would be difficult to pass. As much as I love the street and the houses, I could never live on a street like that.
A little further up from Udell Court, I came across a house that is only accessible by the stairs. It is a charming house with decorative tiles on the front porch. The front door was open and I happened to catch a glimpse inside. The inside was just as charming as the outside. How I would love to have a tour inside this home.
After about 2 hours, I finished the stair walk. At first I thought of doing stairwalk #31 but decided against it, saving it for another day, preferably in the morning when it is cooler. It was 90 degrees and I was ready to go home.
